French term

Coffrets cadeaux

French to English Marketing Marketing
Je cherche à traduire l'expression "coffrets cadeaux" du style Smartbox et compagnie. Est-ce "gift boxes", "gift experiences" ou un autre terme?
Change log

Jul 20, 2009 04:38: Yolanda Broad changed "Level" from "Non-PRO" to "PRO"

Votes to reclassify question as PRO/non-PRO:

PRO (1): Adam Lankamer

Non-PRO (3): B D Finch, Jocelyne S, SJLD

When entering new questions, KudoZ askers are given an opportunity* to classify the difficulty of their questions as 'easy' or 'pro'. If you feel a question marked 'easy' should actually be marked 'pro', and if you have earned more than 20 KudoZ points, you can click the "Vote PRO" button to recommend that change.

How to tell the difference between "easy" and "pro" questions:

An easy question is one that any bilingual person would be able to answer correctly. (Or in the case of monolingual questions, an easy question is one that any native speaker of the language would be able to answer correctly.)

A pro question is anything else... in other words, any question that requires knowledge or skills that are specialized (even slightly).

Another way to think of the difficulty levels is this: an easy question is one that deals with everyday conversation. A pro question is anything else.

When deciding between easy and pro, err on the side of pro. Most questions will be pro.

* Note: non-member askers are not given the option of entering 'pro' questions; the only way for their questions to be classified as 'pro' is for a ProZ.com member or members to re-classify it.

Gift boxes

I have seen this term in the wild hundreds of times.
Note from asker:

Peer comment(s):

agree Tony M : I think it depends a bit on whether the emphasis is on the actual packing itself, or the contents.

gift voucher (in a box), (boxed) gift voucher, voucher pack

Anything without "voucher" sounds like a box for putting diverse gifts in. The thing with Smartbox "coffrets cadeaux" and the like - of which I have been unfortunate enough to have received a couple; what a waste of other people's money! - is that they contain a VOUCHER for something "thrilling", "fun", "out-of-the-ordinary", "exciting", like a meal in an ethic restaurant, a stay in a B&B, a stay in a posh logis-château, scuba diving, sky diving, etc. Hey, if I want to do any of those things, I'll do them, right? Ok, ok, when someone gives me a 1500-page book on "A Hundred and Three Things to Do with Bent Nails and Bits of String", I'll exclaim that I'm over the moon with joy and that it's just what I've always wanted (but that I'll put it aside until retirement), but at least no-one is being ripped off to the tune of 30%, not to mention the money pocketed for no-shows. End of gripe.

Peer comment(s):

agree Jocelyne S : Agree that it's the voucher that's important (or gift certificate for N. America) - although disagree with the gripe as I thoroughly enjoyed my Smartbox in a posh château!
