French term

fossé situé dans l’embranchement

French to English Tech/Engineering Automotive / Cars & Trucks
This is from a police report of a road traffic accident between two vehicles. Vehicle "A" is a caravan that came uncoupled on collision. Not sure what the correct road terms are here.

Sous la violence du choc, le véhicule “A” se décroche du véhicule “B” est est poussée par la cabine du véhicule “C” pour finir sa course dans le fossé situé dans l’embranchement d’une voie d’insertion.

Thank you

Thank you both for your help. I think I need to somehow make it clear that the vehicle ended up in the ditch between the main road and slip road (as you said Bourth) rather than just the ditch of the slip road.
Bourth (X) Jul 17, 2009:
Agree with Chris "dans l'embranchement" seems unnecessarily complicated, unless of course the road layout IS complicated. An "embranchement" is a Y-junction, so says PIARC. It would be unusual (but not impossible) for a slip road to have its own Y-junction. What it must mean is that the caravan ended up in the ditch between the road/motorway it had been travelling on and the slip road.

Re. slip road, while PIARC gives "vitesse d'insertion" (entry speed), it does not give "voie d'insertion", but rather "voie d'entrée" = "entry slip road, entry ramp, entrance ramp".

in the ditch... As is often the way, it sounds as if this vehicle ended up in the ditch, in this case where a side or feeder road joins the main road. This would be a slip road if a motorway. I wouldn't be surprised if "situé dans l'embranchement..." is redundant.

Pretty sure this is it - might need a little wrangling but the right terms are there.

I regard "lateral to" or "sideways of" more fluently than "located at or in"
