La cosa se me antoja complicada si queremos reflejar esta dualidad agropecuaria y que ser "farmer" es algo peyorativo a los ojos de la protagonista.
Tampoco me parece simple el tema del "She should have known that". No quiere decir que ella no lo supiera, sino que debería haber pensado en las consecuencias (¿quizá de ser pareja de Porter?) en su círculo social.
Creo que yo lo resolvería con algo como:
- "Porter era de pueblo, tuviera las posesiones que tuviera, algo que quizá no había tenido en cuenta".
Me refiero a que el hecho de que Porter viviera del campo afecta aparentemente a la relación de la protagonista con el círculo social con el que anhela relacionarse más estrechamente.

Estoy de acuerdo con Tomás, sobre el significado de "farmer"... pero no diría "del pueblo", dado que precisamente era del campo...
Es obvio que ese tipo de trabajo no resultaba aceptable para el círculo al que la protagonista aspiraba.
