汽车驱动模式大致有“四轮驱动/4WD”和“两轮驱动/4WD”，许多 4WD 车型可进行 2WD 与 4WD 两种驱动模式之间的切换。老式车要求司机将车停下后进行切换，而许多新式车因设有一种自动前轮轮毂离合装置，而使司机在汽车行进过程中便可实现这一驱动模式切换，称：“行进中（驱动模式）切换”。
