I trust you can see this "demande d'infos" is from someone on this popular forum (forum.doctissimo.fr) requesting information from other participants on whether it is possible at all TO ENTER a main courante ("faire une main courante") one year after the event. In other words this request for information on a web-based forum should not be confused with a request for information on m.c. at the police station !
Francis Marche Apr 19, 2009:
Requesting the entry of a record Demander une main courante is metonymy for "demander l'inscription d'une main courante", which means to request a FRESH ENTRY in the local police logbook, usually for minor offences which would not warrant direct police intervention (exchanges of verbal threats between neighbourgs is a classical case). I'm not sure what the exact Eng. equivalent would be but bear in mind it is NOT the request to access past entries or obtain a "copy" of the book.

request for a copy of a police daybook entry

It seems that you can go to the police station and have some event or other entered into the daybook which then must be investigated: it is a "backdoor" procedure for lodging a complaint (as I understand it it doesn't appear in official figures!)

Presumably "demande" refers to a request for a copy of an entry for some legal purpose, but that is difficult to tell without more context.

I found a good discussion about it at http://www.commentcamarche.net/forum/affich-2472584-main-cou...

Here are some snippets:

neutral Francis Marche : Demander une m.c. is to request the logging of a fresh ENTRY rather than a copy of past entries. e.g. your neighbourg threatens violence against you for having objected to his dog pissing on your lawn. You then go to the "commissariat" to do just that.

indeed, that was my first thought but the context made me think otherwise: we shall need more evidence if we are to settle this, m'lud

I also found this explanation for "main courante":
Main courante is literally the police’s daily record of events, but in France it’s evolved to become a means to register a legal complaint that’s not an official plainte. Its usefulness is that it is a legal record, signed and dated, and receivable as evidence if things worsen to actual crimes

Hope it helps!

disagree Francis Marche : Sorry, wrong. It is not the request for information on existing m.c. These "mains courantes" are logged in by police upon request of one or several parties involved in the event, and these requests are the "demandes" de main courante
