This site font became so small I don't see what I'm typing.I know you've chosen your version. But"sociale"doesn't really refer directly to the community di per se. It's more about issues.Say, minority rights,AIDS,etc.I would put "involved in social issues

Many thanks to you all I used "community work" for "il sociale", but all your other contributions were extremely useful as the essay delves into the various types of voluntary work found in social welfare.
Thanks also to Michael for bearing out my doubts about "social work".

Where did you say it... clearly? Anyway, my note was for the answerers, so that I didn't have to go pane by pane. Incidentally, "welafre" ain't going to swing it either. But what does? It starts driving me nuts too...

social work in Englisg is a profession. Social Worker = Assistente Sociale. Impegnati nel sociale has nothing whatsoever to do with a profession of social work. Such a translation would be at very best ambiguous not to say outright misleading.

Because for me "social work" has connotations that refer to state employees as in Soical Services.
"Community work" seems to be the term that was escaping me! Cheers!!!

Sociale ha talmente tanti significati..., comunque, in uqesto caso, secondo me, si tratta di "impegnati in attività di assistenza sociale volontaria"..., qualunque risposta rispecchi quel concetto è quella buona...

welfare field

I would use this in context. "Social work" is a bit too specific as a professional field (social services, social workers, etc.), in my view, but you could use it. If it weren't for the specific context, "voluntary work" or "charity" might do since most of it is in the "welfare" or nowadays "social" field.

I agree with Juliette's "community work", but I also heard "community service " a lot in the US. I think "service" expresses very well the volunteering side of the whole thing.
