Change log

Feb 2, 2009 08:53: Steffen Walter changed "Level" from "Non-PRO" to "PRO"

Votes to reclassify question as PRO/non-PRO:

PRO (1): Edith Kelly

Non-PRO (1): Ingeborg Gowans (X)

When entering new questions, KudoZ askers are given an opportunity* to classify the difficulty of their questions as 'easy' or 'pro'. If you feel a question marked 'easy' should actually be marked 'pro', and if you have earned more than 20 KudoZ points, you can click the "Vote PRO" button to recommend that change.

How to tell the difference between "easy" and "pro" questions:

An easy question is one that any bilingual person would be able to answer correctly. (Or in the case of monolingual questions, an easy question is one that any native speaker of the language would be able to answer correctly.)

A pro question is anything else... in other words, any question that requires knowledge or skills that are specialized (even slightly).

Another way to think of the difficulty levels is this: an easy question is one that deals with everyday conversation. A pro question is anything else.

When deciding between easy and pro, err on the side of pro. Most questions will be pro.

* Note: non-member askers are not given the option of entering 'pro' questions; the only way for their questions to be classified as 'pro' is for a ProZ.com member or members to re-classify it.

Discussion

Nesrin Feb 3, 2009:
Yes, hab ich doch Recht gehabt (in meiner Agree zu Jutta's "Menüwahl" Vorschlag hier: http://www.proz.com/kudoz/german_to_english/tourism_travel/3...
Sonali Hegde (asker) Feb 3, 2009:
client's reply es ist in der Tat ein Unterschied:

The client has finally replied:

Menüwahl bedeutet, dass mehrere fest vorgegebene/ unterschiedliche Menüs angeboten werden und eines davon ausgewählt werden kann.

Wahlmenü bedeutet, dass aus verschiedenen Vorspeisen, Hauptgerichten und Nachspeisen ein Menü zusammengestellt werden kann.
Sonali Hegde (asker) Feb 2, 2009:
See note above! Sorry, should have entered here. See note above.
Sonali Hegde (asker) Feb 2, 2009:
I am still waiting. The client hasnt gotten back yet. Wahlmenü and Menüwahl appear in two different texts (text files) for different hotels. But they are from the same set for the same location.
Jutta Wappel Feb 2, 2009:
@ Edith - this is not about whether the two terms as such are interchangeable or not - it's about whether Sonali's client actually used the two different terms on purpose because they offer two different things, which I doubt.
Jutta Wappel Feb 2, 2009:
Let's discuss it! First of all, I agree that there are two possibilities:
one, guests can choose beween several set (3-course) menus, and
two, they can have a 3-course meal where they can choose each course from a predefined selection.
Assuming that Sonali's two queries originate from the same text, this would mean that the same establishment offers BOTH varieties - I think this is highly unlikely.
I still maintain that Sonali should clarify this with her client. There is such HUGE potential for customer complaints in being unclear about what is and what isn't included in a package deal, that I personally wouldn't risk getting it wrong.
Edith Kelly Feb 2, 2009:
My problem: for Wahlmenü und Menüwahl the same answer by the same answerer. This presupposes that the two terms are interchangeable. May be - may be not.
Steffen Walter Feb 2, 2009:
Note to Jutta - please post this as an answer. Thanks.
Jutta Wappel Feb 2, 2009:
You would say "3-course set menu" or "choice between (however many) set menus"
Sonali Hegde (asker) Feb 2, 2009:
So, how would one put that? A 3-course meal?

http://www.currie.uwa.edu.au/docs/Threecoursemeal.pdf
Edith Kelly Feb 2, 2009:
A set menue is not a Wahlmenü. What they mean is a set menue with a limited number of options from each of 3 courses.

Menu with selections

I've used this in the past and my clients ere always happy with it. My understanding of the term is that the guest can choose between a selection of main courses (fish, chicken ,beef...) or other courses.

disagree Edith Kelly : not a set menu .... each of 3 courses has possibly 3 choices, and one can pick either of the 3, so no choice of menus but choice of items of a set menu // Your discussion entry was made much later than my original comment today at 07.28 a.m.

table d'hôte menu

could be the expression you are looking for

Here a definition I found:

A full-course meal offering a limited number of choices and served at a fixed price in a restaurant or hotel. In this sense, also called prix fixe.
