In most cities of the world that were planned, rather than developing gradually over a long period of time, streets are typically laid out on a grid plan, so that city blocks are square or rectangular. A perimeter block is a type of city block which is built up on all sides surrounding a central space that is semi-private. They are usually between 4 and 7 storeys in height, and may contain a mixture of uses, with commercial or retail functions on the ground floor. Blockrandbebauung ist die typische Erscheinungsform von Altbauten in Europas Großstädten und Metropolen im ausgehenden 19. und frühen 20. Jahrhundert. Wie der Name schon sagt, spricht man dann von einer Blockrandbebauung, wenn der Rand eines durch Straßen oder Wege abgegrenzten Blocks (nahezu) vollständig überbaut ist. Oft sind sämtliche Gebäude am Rand eines solchen Blocks gleich oder sehr ähnlich strukturiert und unterscheiden sich nur in der Dekoration. In solchen Fällen ist davon auszugehen, dass der Altbaublock in seiner Gesamtheit ursprünglich von einem einzigen Architekten geplant und durch nur einen Bauherrn in Auftrag gegeben wurde. Ein Altbau in Blockrandbebauung ist üblicherweise ein Mehrfamilienhaus mit 3 bis 6 Stockwerken und dementsprechend 6 bis 18 Mietparteien oder Wohnungseigentümern.
