From the images you gave - very often used for a tart.
Only use if there are lots of chives. For just 2 strands why not just say criss-crossed or crossed chives?

I have seen it used in recipes, the same as the French references that you gave.

I think this probably supports Gayle's answer. I found this in the Grand Dictionnaire (it refers to the planting of trees but the idea still seems to be criss-cross or lozenge between the criss crosses?):
