German term
Gefallen wecken
German to English
Art/Literary
Art, Arts & Crafts, Painting
Any an expression that follows on the heels of this, don't think I've got a clue what's going on here:
Der Redakteur bemühte sich zwar um eine objektive Darstellung von Wotrubas Arbeiten, doch konnte er seine wohl allgemein antimodernistische Sicht kaum verbergen. „Was bleibt uns, außer den Zeichen des Unbehagens und der Bestürzung vor den neueren Gebilden, noch auszudrücken, wenn Wotrubas Kunst in keiner Phase den Anspruch erhebt, mit ihrem Zeugnis Gefallen zu wecken?“
The editor strived in fact to have an objective representation of Wotruba’s works, but he could scarcely conceal his apparent general anti-modernistic perspective. “What is left for us to express, besides indications of discomfort and the trepidation towards the new images, when Wotruba’s art in no phase claims to wecken Gefallen with its credentials/testimonyx?”

3 hrs
to be obliging
doesn't mirror the verb constuction, but "obliging" ("gefällig sein") might fit if you're looking for another nuance of "gefallen".
1 day 9 hrs
to wake interest
Here is just another suggestion, it retains some of the original phrase, to "wake".
