Discussion

Dana Rinaldi (asker) Aug 8, 2008:
I'm sorry that's all I have. The previous line describes shoes and the next cufflinks.
Shera Lyn Parpia Aug 8, 2008:
Dana, have you got a picture? That would make it easier for everyone!
Ellen Kraus Aug 8, 2008:
whatever the adequate term may be, I would suggest to use something neutral, such as e.g. <effect seam> (= cucitura d´effetto ) because it implies that the one-colour tie experiences some sort of upgrading thanks to this kind of seam
Tom in London Aug 8, 2008:
...."though I didnt see the thing depicted, I liked the article"

That's the point, I think - a rat's tail seam is invisible :)

corded edges

or, finished with corded edges
This is a tie, not a hat.

It's not a seam (with the purpose of joining two layers of cloth together) as far I can see here, the purpose of this stitching is to give a decorative finish on the edges of the tie.

for pictures see:
http://www.sewingmachinesplus.com/media/products/techniques/...
The example shown here has stitches which are too distantly spaced but a closer stitch could give the satin stitch finish I imagine a tie would require.

It's also used on the edges pf bridal veils:

p.s. the cord can also be rattail cord..... but it is an edging, not a seam.

agree potra : Yes, rat imagery is not appropriate in my opinion.

neutral Shera Lyn Parpia : coda di topo is rattail (single word usually) but that doesn't mean cucitura a coda di topo is rattail seam!

a strip of fabric enclosing a cord like rattai which can be inserted into the seam. the flexibility of rattail enables it to go around edges and curves. Gli Italiani conoscono circa 90 cuciture differenti !.
