The Danube Island is the favorite recreation area near Vienna for the Viennese. It is an artificial island that lies between the real Danube River and the New Danube River.
The New Danube is an artificial arm of the Danube that was built to protect Vienna from floods.
(In the Spring, after the snow melts or after heavy rainfalls, parts of Vienna along the Danube were flooded.)
The Danube Island runs parallel for about 22 kilometers to the Danube. Locks separate it from the main river. When the water level of the Danube is normal, then the locks are closed. This gives us a 22 kilometer artifical lake for swimming, surfing, waterskiing, etc. right in Vienna (with good water quality!) . If the water level of the Danube rises, which happens 2 or 3 times a year, then the locks are opened and the water can flow through Vienna without doing any damage.
