French term

montant

French to English Tech/Engineering Construction / Civil Engineering Joinery/Wood work/Facades
Hi,

This is in the context of a brochure for a CAD-based software for constructing façades and curtain walls.

La construction du châssis avec xxx suit la démarche naturelle de fabrication en définissant le dessin d'élévation: définition du cadre dormant, insertion de montants et traverses intérmédiares, placement de vitrages et ouvrants dans les trous.

I am not sure if the equivalent of montant and traverse in English is stiles and rails or transoms and mullions.

Thanks,
Uma

Mullion transom seems okay too http://www.selectaglaze.co.uk/coupling.php, you decide.

montant = mullion and traverse = transom in my previous sentence

mullion

From my experience with a French curtainwalling designer, "montant" is what is called the "mullion" in this context. It is not the same as a "mullion" in a window, where the mullion is a vertical divider/support between panes. However, in curtain walling, the "mullion" is a vertical divider between modular windows (or assimilated), each with a number of panes (or assimilated) and its own "sub-mullions" if I may coin a phrase.

A transom or "traverse" is a horizontal member fulfilling the same dividing/support function.

stile

I think this is the correct joinery term for an upright in a frame.
