German term

matt glänzend

Isn't this a bit of an oxymoron? I mean how can it be matt AND shine at the same time. No matter which definition I try for 'glänzend', I still don't feel it sounds quite right - I mean 'resplendent matt'...still implies that the light is shining off the surface and matt, in my opinion, doesn't. But maybe I'm just splitting hairs here. What do you think the best translation would be?

Non-ProZ.com Sep 5, 2002:
matt Hi Cilian, although 'matt finish' makes me think of Dulux paint (for some reason I can even see the dog they use to advertise it), maybe that's right - maybe I should simply say 'matt'. But in this context, with the 'einst' before it - formerly matt sounds a bit weak to me. Maybe I'm just splitting hairs again!

satin sheen

This is my favorite term for the look. It's not shiny and it's not dull.

4 KudoZ points awarded for this answer. Comment: "It's incredible how many answers are hiding out there, isn't it?! Well, thank you all for the wonderful suggestions. In the end, I think I'll go along with satin sheen, it sounds elegant and doesn't make me think of the Dulux advert! Thank you, Kim!"

how about,

\"the previously/formerly low-lustre finish\" - just an idea
Peer comment(s):

agree Barbara Lawson : low lustre might be most descriptive term in conjunction with the wall's finish

neutral Mary Worby : Can't help feeling that 'low-lustre' is a little mundane, even negative, when what we want is something opulent! :-)

und die einst ***matt glänzenden*** Innenwände aus tadlekt (polierter Wandverputz) schimmelten und verblassten

And the tadlekt inside walls have lost their satin sheen of yesteryear and become mouldy and pale.

And the tadlekt inside walls are a mouldy, pale immitation of their former lush satin glory.

Howsabout that?

First impression when I saw the question was 'satin matt' - but that definitely sounds too much like a Dulux ad!

gentle shine or pale shine

Definitely a bit of a teaser, but the fact that the tadlekt is poliert means that you need to stick with something with overtones of \"shiny\". Working on the analogy of \"mattes Licht\" (dim) and mattblau (pale) I\'ve tried to incorporate this sense of matt.
