What is meant by a restrained joint?
When a weld is made the deposited weld metal shrinks on solidification. Because of this shrinkage all welded structures should be free to move so that the weld is not ‘strained’. Some welds are, however, made in situations where freedom of joint movement is not possible. In this case the joint is under restraint.
