topic-based project examination
Possibilities for "themenorientiert" might be "topic-based" or "thematic".
Without more context I'm unsure what is meant by "Projektprüfung" so I went for quite a literal translation.
In British schools "coursework" is sometimes used to refer to project-based work that counts towards your grade, but I don't think they call it that in the States.
Anyway, these are just a few ideas - I hope they are of some help.

"Project work" might be another possibility, depending on the context and whether the "exam" element is clear or not (ie. "topic-based project work").

"Topic-oriented" might also be suggested as translation for themenorientiert and it can also be used. I personally prefer using "driven" if possible and where appropriate.
