English term

Women's magazines vs. feminine magazines

English Marketing Journalism
I have been trying to discover the difference between the above two terms. I feel that they are different. My own perception (which may well be wrong) is that "feminine magazines" include the under 18 year old market and are, possibly, more geared to health concerns, conformity with feminine roles, cooking and beauty.

"feminine magazines" is not commonly used

That term is not commonly used and sounds strange to this native speaker's ears. (The phrase returns only 500 hits on Google (many of which, interestingly, seem to be from sites put up by non-native speakers), as opposed to 336,000 for "women's magazines."

In other words, I can't pinpoint a difference because the second term isn't generally used.

Just to be clear: by "second term" I'm referring of course to "feminine magazines." I was going by the order of the terms in your question, not in my response!

I think "teen magazine" suffices for magazines directed at teenage girls, because interestingly enough, few teen magazines are directed at boys. See description at: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Teen_magazine

agree Jennifer Levey : Yes - the only term I've heard in the UK is 'women's magazines' - 'feminine magazine' suggests that magazines can have a gender, when of course it's the target readership that has a gender.

Thanks. I agree. I was going to say in my answer that "feminine" only applies to people, not inaminate objects, but that isn't really necessarily the case (eg, "That color is too feminine for you"). In any case, "feminine magazines" sounds very strange.
agree Madeleine MacRae Klintebo : Never heard of a feminine magazine. And BTW, what are "feminine roles"? Cooking, cleaning, nappy changing? The mind boggles.

4 KudoZ points awarded for this answer. Comment: "Thanks Brett. I do note that though there are few ghits, some of them are publishing industry or academic. Not that that proves anything. I thought it sounded strange, but not totally unfamiliar. I think it is probably a term to avoid, though I'm still unsure how else one would include the pre-teen and teen market other than by writing "women's and girls' magazines" - but why not?"

magazines directed at women vs. femininist perception/interpretation of the term?

not familiar with the term feminine magazines as a general term, but e.g. compare the sites on these (apart from mistranslations)

Note from asker:
This did occur to me, but I think it is only applicable when feminine is in inverted commas.

neutral BrettMN : "feminine" and "feminist" are so far apart in their meanings that to me this only makes sense if someone has mistakenly used "feminine" for "feminist"
