Il s'agit de deux titres de paragraphs dans un article academique sur le marketing et plus particulierement sur l'etude du temperament:
"En aval : les caractéristiques formelles des comportements"
et, plus loin:
"En amont : les origines biologiques du tempérament"
I can't find a way to put this neatly. Any thoughts?

We're talking about a study of temperament here.
"aval" and "amont" in this context surely cannot be translated as "upstream" and "downstream", IMO.
A translator with expertise in the social sciences (which I do not have) may find something more appropriate than my suggestion, which i'm just throwing into the ring to stimulate some other ideas.

Thank you Alanna : I don't think this justifies a glossary entry, though. Perhaps you might like to make one with the phrase you finally chose ?

Why not simply "downstream" and "upstream", in the sense of management work directions ...

My Oxford Business French dictionary gives these definitions with a further example .. ""industrie en aval" = "downstream industry". Without much more context, I think they might be talking about how behaviours feed into the marketing equation. Another possibility might be "top-down" and "bottom-up" in the sense that people's individually biologically determined behaviour influences marketing of a product while at the same time certain recognised charcteristics of behaviour also feed in, from above.
(It's a bit vague, isn't it? Nice and academic! Good luck!)

: Yes, you have to know what "amont/aval" are in relation to. (A phase in) The study itself, behavioural develpment, etc.
