thousand ball drill
This is a possibility, although depending on context you might need to add more explanation. See reference:
"Though recently the practice has been abandoned by some managers, Japanese baseball is famous for its ***thousand ball drill***, in which fielders are forced to field one thousand balls in a row. The practice literally makes players drop to the ground because they are no longer able to field. And, in the pre-season, pitchers are often made to throw 4000 to 5000 pitches in order to strengthen their arms and their spirits."

You can also find references for "1000 fungo drill", although that requires the audience to know what "fungo" is.

to field 1000 practice balls hit at him
ノック refers to practice balls hit by a coach during practice sessions at the players on the baseball field. The player must field (catch) these balls hit all over the field and in all possible manners -- grounders and fly balls. So, this guy has to feild 1000 balls at each practice session!! I believe there is a term "fungo" for ノック also. But, non-baseball population might not know that meaning, either.
