Can someone please tell me what referencia means here? Does it mean (leading) reputation?
As a side issue, I would be very grateful for any suggestions on how to translate "...elemento(s) de gran valor" as I'm having trouble moving away from a literal translation here. I can't think what to put for this part.

You were spot-on with your interpretation. "Referencia" is to be interepreted, in my view, as "punto de referencia", i.e., that Spain may be viewed as an icon, a force to be reckoned with or imitated or taken in consideration.

Although not a translation of the word reference, I think this might work here. Regarding "elementos de gran valor" I sugest something like "... are all very valuable.."
