From the presentation of a course for learning French as a Second Language:
Un cahier d'exercices favorisant l'apprentissage de l'autonomie (des exercices, des methodes de travail, des pages "Pour aller plus loin", des auto-evaluations corrigees et trois elargissements).
Could these be described as lesson extensions?

extension activity
I think you have the right idea Mara. Course books often have these type of activities which recycle the topics and disciplines studied and encourage the learners to apply them to a task, rather than just doing an exercise.

Comment: "Thanks Sheila, this did the trick. Thanks also to Katsy for her suggestion of "branching out" which was very useful elsewhere in my text."

extended study notes/appendix/ activity notes
depends what it is ... at the back of my old teaching books I have the 3 options mentioned + Grammar review, Grammar section, (extended) language focus, Reference section, Activities appendix ...

Note added at 1 hr (2008-01-06 14:21:00 GMT)
--------------------------------------------------
another option could be extended course notes

thanks Cervin ... yes, study or course is probably the best option as we don't know exactly what the section contains

'branching out' exercises
I agree totally with Sheila and suezen's explanations ; I propose the expression most often used in ESL in French schools for this type of exercise. (expressed, very often in French (!!) as - "ils feront des exercices et puis du 'branching out'")

: Oh yuk! I only teach adults and I've never heard of the expression, and I hope I never do (in French at any rate)!

Sorry to disgust you, Sheila! However, I can assure you that it is standard usage in ESL teaching in secondary schools (and in "defence" of the horrible franglais, it is only English teachers who use it like that...)

supplemental exercises
Hello,
This may be "supplemental exercises", which build on what has already been learned. It's used all the time.
Ceci élargisserait bien ses connaissances d'un certain aspect (des certains aspects) linguistique (s) du language en question.
I hope this helps.
