clarify the point please

English Art/Literary Music
"The jazzers say ''be what you play''," he smiles. "I really want to be what I play. ***It’s the difference between having a conversation that moves you or someone who tries to take over."*** While there are some drummers who like to show off flashy moves, technique and rudiments, they also forget about the music, he suggests – "It should be about entertaining. It’s not just about what you can do with the drums. You see some people out there who are trying to be so clever they forget about why they are there. They are musicians after all."

Dear native English speakers!
Please help me clarify what they mean by the sentence asterisked - I can't really get the point. What does it have to do with the previous sentences?
P.S. It's a drummer talking.

"It is the difference between:
a) having a conversation (in this case: the "dialogue" between the musician and the public)
and
b) someone stepping in (in this case: a musician who just shows himself, not playing real music, and not establishing any "dialogue" with the public)

put the music first; don't show off technique

The sentence immediately following the quote helps to clarify its meaning: the music itself, and not the player or his/her ego/technique/ambition, should be the first priority if you really want to make music.

thank you Patricia
agree Dylan Edwards : There's an analogy between conversation and the interaction among the players. "conversation that moves you": that sounds like letting the conversation guide you, rather than trying to dominate the conversation.

a musical conversation between the instruments - one plays a part the other responds and there is harmony and interaction. If one just takes over to show off, the others are left out in the cold not "talking" to anyone
