French term

animer la convergence avec les cibles

French to English Bus/Financial Human Resources
Hi everyone

That awful "animer" word again!

One of the "HR Performance cell's" tasks is to "animer la convergence avec les cibles."

Basically getting results to match objectives, but I'm stumped as to how I might translate "animer" in this context.

Many thanks in advance.

Discussion

Sandra Petch (asker) Nov 28, 2007:
No, it's still part of the description of this particular "cell's" functions.
B D Finch Nov 27, 2007:
I assume that the 2nd occurrence is part of a job description and the job holder is meant to ... and encourage the achievement of targets.
Sandra Petch (asker) Nov 27, 2007:
The phrase comes up again this time with further context "Assure le pilotage économique et anime la convergence avec les cibles"... suggesting that it is the budgets that need to be kept on-target. Any thoughts? Thank you!
Sandra Petch (asker) Nov 26, 2007:
Thanks for all your input and interest! I'm 99% sure that "cibles" is being used to mean targets, goals, objectives.
"Amener" would make sense too but "animer" is a real buzzword in this presentation (comes up in every other bullet point and needs a different translation each time, of course!).
CMJ_Trans (X) Nov 26, 2007:
and if they really meant: amener la convergence...?
Laura Tridico Nov 26, 2007:
Following up with Emma, in a broader context is there any chance the term "cibles" is being used to refer to a target group of people rather than general goals/objectives?
Emma Paulay Nov 26, 2007:
Hi Sandra, are you sure "cibles"=objectives? HR usually uses "objectifs" for objectives. It might help to know what sort of company this is?

mastermind efforts to achieve targets

animer = to moderate; to mastermind; to lead; to be in charge of; to run; to steer; to guide; to direct

In this case, probably just ENSURE

4 KudoZ points awarded for this answer. Comment: "I ran this one by the client to be sure and it does just mean to ensure employees work towards targets. Thank you everyone, there were many good suggestions here."

steering results in line with objectives

Just quick brainstorming as I dash out the door, but maybe it will get the ball rolling for others :-)

to encourage the achievement of targets

Or to stimulate the achievement of targets, but I prefer "encourage"m which I think is more in keeping with how an HR unit should operate.

displays leadership in achieving objectives

I've used variations of "to lead" for animer in past translations in the HR field. I turned it around a bit here for stylistic variety. I like using active verbs in these kinds of presentations because the company usually wants to sound "dynamic".

There are a lot of variations on this theme - I just wanted to throw out this possiblity.

coordinate/lead (the) drive for targeted results

something along these lines perhaps ... be proactive in meeting (the) targets
