Complaint of people deported to Vologda:

Мы взяли с собой продовольствия, но когда увозили, у нас его отобрали в Вологде местные власти, но мы не считаемся с этим, что сало, муку белую отдали, а нам теперь ничего не дают, кроме одного кипятку.

Discussion

Deborah Hoffman (asker) Sep 10, 2007:
I'm wondering if they felt they had to put in some sort of disclaimer to avoid sounding like the kulaks they'd been accused of being.
Mark Berelekhis Sep 10, 2007:
It's not that they don't care at all. It's that there was obviously something else that they cared about more, so they were willing to part with these things for the sake of that 'something else.' It's an expression, not to be taken literary.
The Misha Sep 10, 2007:
How come most of you folks say these people don't care? Oh, please ... They had their salo and bread taken away from them, for crying out loud. Would you not care? Ya by glotku im peregryz!

Though not a literal translation, that's essentially what this means.

but we don't even care that...

They have some food supplies with them, and the food was taken away by the authorities, but now they don't even care that the authorities had taken away some good food, then gave nothing instead except of some boiled water.

I don't quite get the meaning of the phrase. My suggestion is that the authors don't want to emphasize this fact comparing to other, more terrible realities.

but it wasn't the worst thing they did

but that's not the point
but it wasn't the worst of our troubles

IMHO they are saying there was something still worse than having been robbed and left with no food

Russian term (edited): мы не считаемся с этим

but that’s not what bothers us much

Something like that, I would imagine.

…but that’s not what bothers us much; the main thing is they don’t give us anything.

It did not mean anything at all to us...

Those things that they gave back, in fact, did not improve the situation, they meant nothing...
