is a process in which surfaces are cleaned that have been subjected to forms of deposits (paints, in your case oils, rust, etc) by using an chemical agent that goes all the way through to the surface ... ovid

: Fine explanation, but what's it called in German? Abbeizen is used for stripping paint, but what about stripping oil from the bottom of a tanker?

I am not sure if this is the exact German phrase for this, but the link provided explains it rather well. It appears to be for the crude oil that sinks to (or remains at) the bottom of the transport tank.
