When they put the contents on the side of the can, they put also a qualification ("grueso", muy grueso", etc) AND the quantity, but within a margin:

"Calibre: grueso: 8/10 frutos"

NEVER (for obvious reasons have I seen a single figure)

Yes, you are right, that's why "5 frutos" does not actually refer to the number of asparagus you get but to their size. Many thanks!

En efecto, "5 frutos" significa que hay cinco espárragos en cada tarro/lata, sin embargo, hace referencia directamente a su grosor (cuantos menos hay, más gruesos) y así es cómo se habla del grosor en temas "esparraguiles". Muchas gracias."
