In observational cosmology the basic units of structure for the universe are galaxies. These galaxies consist of highly organized collections of gas, dust and stars interacting gravitationally to produce a variety of morphological types. While the general principles governing their formation and evolution are thought to be known, the details and specific models for these processes are only very incompletely understood at the present time.
