I know this is "of which," but I'm wondering whether it conveys anything about the speaker, for example does it sound old fashioned or more educated?

Zaranee spasibo...

У меня на воле не было детей. Каюсь, чуяло мое сердце, что муж мой плохо кончит, и не спешила я обзавестись потомством. Теперь мне 40 лет, и 15 лет срока, из коих 11 впереди. Так-то, девчата...

Discussion

Tevah_Trans May 7, 2007:
To me it conveys sadness and regret, which of course ties together with "не спешила я" vs. "я не спешила". For what it's worth, sentimental and nostalgic somewhat.
Vitali Stanisheuski May 7, 2007:
sounds old-fashioned and something "bookish"

of which

It does sound a bit old-fashioned, but I quess "of which" will do the same trick

agree Olga Cartlidge : I agree w. Tevah that it adds a tragic note to the narrative as here a touch of high flown, almost archaic style is used to describe what would have been considered an ordinary occurence. Dostoyevsky s characters use archaic style to the same effect.

senteNced, to 15 years in prison
Peer comment(s):

neutral Vitaly Kisin : drop `imprisoned' or replace with `in prison' if absolutely necessary, otherwise very strange...
