I know this is "of which," but I'm wondering whether it conveys anything about the speaker, for example does it sound old fashioned or more educated?

: I agree w. Tevah that it adds a tragic note to the narrative as here a touch of high flown, almost archaic style is used to describe what would have been considered an ordinary occurence. Dostoyevsky s characters use archaic style to the same effect.
