... "con publicidad" simply means that the offence took place publicly, not, I imagine, that they took out advertising slagging off the person ...

libel

libel is a crime, so using the word criminal here would be redundant

crime of Public Slander

...or Defamation of Character. Common term in USA especially about tabloids. Slander is verbal and libel written so you have a choice.
