Es la respuesta final de Carol la que creo que funciona. No había escrito mi propia respuesta, sino comentarios, porque sinceramente no sé el suficiente inglés como para traducir del español al inglés, como ya expresé. Pero sí pensé que podía ayudar a quien pregunta (MJ Barber), puesto que el español es también mi idioma materno, y creo que lo conozco relativamente bien. En definitiva, hemos encontrado, creo, la buena respuesta.

Árnica is used in a skin cream in Mexico and commonly used for small abrasions and even burns, I believe. I think this phrase is referring to S asking P to relent and rub some salve on the wound, so to speak. P refuses and therefore does not heal the fissure.
