agree Per Bergvall : But 'pel' is both an ancient marker indicating a volume measure, about half a pint, and a simplified term for pixel. Piles are pæler in Norwegian...

Thanks, Per. On checking with my Norwegian colleagues here at HINT, they say that although the spelling is "pæler", the pronunciation is frequently "peler" leading to occasional misspelling!!

agree asptech : "piles" is correct, and pay no attention to the Norwegian spelling - they have tried for 200 years to get some kind of agreement on it.

agree alexandratheres : I would write peler in Norwegian, but I think the spelling of the word depends on the dialect of the Norwegian writing it

Thank you, Alexandra. The acceptable variation in Norwegian spelling is always a wonder to an Enlish speaker who has been brought up on the strict dicationary-based standard spelling which prevails in English! Long live local dialects!
