"The lump of labour or lump of jobs fallacy is an argument generally considered to be fallacious which relies on the premise that the amount of work available to labourers is fixed. Contending that the amount of work is flexible not static, most economists oppose such arguments. Another way to say this is that it treats a quantity as if it were an exogenous variable, when it's not. It may also be called the fallacy of labour scarcity, or the zero-sum fallacy, from its ties to the zero-sum game."

The lump of labour fallacy, also called the fallacy of labour scarcity in the most restricted sense is a fallacy in economic reasoning. The fallacy occurs when it is assumed that a variable (such as "labor") is fixed when in reality it is subject to endogenous change, determined for instance by a model. In the general case of other, possibly non-economic variables, there does not appear to be a commonly accepted name, such as the lump of X fallacy. This fallacy is typically invoked against attempts to alleviate unemployment by restricting working hours.

مغالطة إجمالي حجم العمل
هذه المغالطة ترتكز على مبدأ خاطئ وهو أنه (إذا تم تخفيض حجم العمال فإن الناتج الإجمالي لحجم العمل سيقل) على الرغم من أنه قد يزيد إذا قام العمال الباقين بزيادة الجهد المبذول، والفرضية هنا تستند على فكرة خاطئة وهي أن حجم الجهد المبذول ثابت بينما في الحقيقة هو متغير. وهذا المصطلح يستخدم خارج السياق الاقتصادي بمعنى (الافتراض الخاطئ بثبات المتغيرات) أي أن هناك أمر متغير ويفترض أنه ثابت. والمصطلح عامة يشير إلى الحسابات التي قد تبدو بداية صحيحة ولكنها في الحقيقة غير منطقية.
وهناك مثال شهير في الاقتصاد على ذلك وهو أنه توزيع جزء من الدخل على فرد معين يعني أن هذا الجزء قد تم أخذه على حساب شخص آخر، إلى هنا تبدو الأمور منطقية .. ولكن الحقيقة غير ذلك. إذ أنه يمكن أخذ مبلغ وليكن 100 دولار من حسابك واستثماره ليصبح 1000 دولار وإعطائك مائتين دولار من الربح وعندها سيكون هناك من أخذ 800 دولار ولم يتم اقتطاع أي شيء من حسابك بل على العكس قد زاد نصيبك
