I've never known grandmaster to mean 名人. In martial arts someone has to climb through the ranks to achieve the title of grandmaster.

If you're looking for a translation of "強い決意と誇りもって勝負に望む者" you could go with something like "hard-core shogi player." I just noticed that Rie supplied that answer already. Note, however, that 師 is usually someone who has the ability to teach or is licensed for what they do.

"Syougi" is the japanese chess. It's nearly equal to the Chess with out to cast a die. Most famous champion in the successions is Sankichi Sakata who is strong enough to not enable to see his wife's death. If you become the matchless champion, you are called "Meijin".

hmmmm, here is another one - a fierce competitor. But this is more of a sport player, like Tiger Woods, and the expression is less elegant. Mike-san, I assume you would like to express some coolness too, with this expresion, wouldn't you? Like a chess/shogi player, like a samurai, like 007 James Bond?

Just a thought. A thought of this line may work.

Those who play professional Chess is called Chess Master, so Shogi master would be someone who plays Shogi professionally.
And you want to say this master tend to do big time move like gambling, yet you want to sound more elegant. So I put 'decisive' to show this quality.
