These Virchow-Robin spaces are located around medullary vessels in the brain, so "hintere" is probably the posterior regions of the brain.

Hi Susan, "white matter" and "medulla" are actually different - one referring to those parts of the CNS which are composed of nerve fibers rather than cell bodies, the other one to a segment of the brainstem (medulla oblongata). Both are possible translations for "Mark". (This is actually somewhat confusing as the adjective, "medullary" is used for both.)

No Google-Hits for "hinteres Mark" or "Hintermark". I suppose that "Rückenmarks" was meant. This is translated as "spinal cord". Otherwise a word-by-word translation of "hinteres Mark" leads to "posterior marrow"
