Chinese term

從 (2/2)

Chinese to English Science Education / Pedagogy Grammatical Analysis
Sentence: 他這個人很自私,從不關心世界的事,他覺得跟世界沒有關係。

1st Attempt: He is selfish. He cares little for world affairs and does not feel himself a part of them.

Question One: I am disturbed by the construction 他這個人, in particular, the construction 他這. Why not just write 他 or 這個人? What is going on here?

Question Two: A similar bewilderment, but certainly less grave, arises with the use of 從 in the second part of this sentence.

Indeed, it is only the third part of this sentence -- namely, 「他覺得跟世界沒有關係」-- that I feel very comfortable with. Given what comes before, even this is doubtful, however.

As always you are welcome to comment on other parts of the sentence.

Discussion

wherestip Jun 16, 2006:
I agree with Wenjer. It's sounds more acceptable to me though in spoken form
Wenjer Leuschel (X) Jun 16, 2006:
"從" 是 "從來" 的縮減。不過,這整句話的語病不小呢。尤其最後的部分和前頭兩部分搭不上嘴,簡直不知所云。應該改為:"他覺得自己跟這個世界沒有(什麼)關係。"

FYI

“從”不關心世界的事 is a short form of “從來都”不關心世事.
“從” in this context = from time recallable; from time who knows when.

"從不" = never.

4 KudoZ points awarded for this answer. Comment: "Final rendering: He is really selfish. He has never shown an interest in world affairs, and is indifferent to what goes on in the world about him. Discussion: Please see http://homepage.mac.com/moogoonghwa/tsongkit/part2/II-9-g.html#s6 for further discussion. Acknowledgement: My thanks to both xuhuanyu and communease. Although xuhuanyu was first I found commuease's entry more complete and thus more helpful. My thanks to wherestip and Chinoise for their confirmatory agreement. Best wishes from the land of no mountains surrounded by sea on many sides."
