Ah! THen my answer (1) applies.
zabrowa (asker) May 29, 2006:
Maro (1948: 8-12) propõe uma classificação, de base lingüística, para os grupos Paez. Segundo esse autor, haveria uma língua com três grupos dialetais principais, que se subdividiriam no total de seis subgrupos distintos.

Muriel Vasconcellos May 29, 2006:
Standing alone, the sentence is ambiguous. Is Maro the one who considers the classification inadequate, or is it his classification that the author is suggesting is inadequate? The sentence could be read either way.

(1) still, we see in ... / nevertheless; OR: (2) on the other hand

The answer depends on Maro's role in the discussion. Here are two different interpretations:

(1) It's Maro's classification:

Even though we may question the accuracy of [Maro's] classification, which was later refined by Balkins, **still,** his work offers a convincing argument for the differentiation of dialects based on nominal suffix usage.

OR: Even though the accuracy of [Maro's] classification, later refined by Balkins, may be open to question, his work **nevertheless** offers a convincing argument for the differentiation of dialects based on nominal suffix usage.

(2) It's someone else's classification:

Even though we may question the accuracy of this classification, which was later refined by Balkins, **Maro, on the other hand,** offers a convincing argument for the differentiation of dialects based on nominal suffix usage.

Even though the accuracy of this classification, later refined by Balkins, is open to question, **Maro, on the other hand,** offers a convincing argument for the differentiation of dialects based on nominal suffix usage.

Mesmo considerando inacurada a sua classificação, a qual foi retrabalhada por Balkins, já em Maro [AN AUTHOR] observa-se que um argumento substancial para a diferenciação entre os dialetos estaria na base da utilização dos sufixos nominais.

We can forget "já"; "in" is enough to give the idea.
Peer comment(s):

agree Paul Dixon : Yes - "já" here has no reference to time, but is a comparative marker. Example: O português é difícil, já o inglês é fácil.

I think here it would be better something like "according to"
