Chinese term

北京市崇文区左安門

Chinese to English Other Geography
I think I have the pronunciation of the first portion (Beijing, Chongwen district), but how do you pronounce 左安門?

Thank you in advance.

Discussion

ysun May 24, 2006:
NKWong: The asker only asked for the pronunciation. I think the written form should be Zuo An Men. However, Zuo'anmen and Zuo'an Men are also acceptable. When people mention Zuo An Men alone, it refers to the vicinity of that place.
Naikei Wong May 23, 2006:
As Mr. Sun says, this gate doesn't exit anymore... it probably refers to the street which bears its name. It's not a district (because Chongwen is)... and it's not a subway station (not yet or ever built).

agree Naikei Wong : This word order is correct... (not Chongwen before Zuo'anmen)

agree redred : Pinyin is okay, the country now advocates pinyin used for address.

Zuo'an Road

The Pinyin pronunciation would be: Zuo3 An1 Men2. And the English road name is: Zuo'an Road.

Hi Can, the character 門 actually means 'gate'. After a search on the internet, I think I would just write 'Chongwen district, Zuoanmen" in the English version.

Thanks!
agree Denyce Seow : Zuoanmen

Yes, Zuoanmen. Thanks!
agree ysun : Zuoanmen. The gate was torn down together with most of other city gates and walls in late 1960's. That is a huge mistake! However, 左安門大街 does exist. BTW, I saw both Berlin wall and Beijing wall. :-)

Thanks, Yueyin. Unfortunately (or rather luckily) I only saw the remnants of Berlin Wall. Will visit them again this weekend when I attend Proz.com's Berlin Conference.
agree Naikei Wong : It should be Zuo'anmen, in any case. // likely to be "Zuo'anmen-dajie" or "Zuo'anmen Street"

agree Francis Fine : I'v e seen it written as "Zuo-an" just like the name of the city of Si-an.
