Question One: Does the word 多 in this context mean "more than" as I have translated it?
Question Two: Would it be wrong to write 五百萬多 instead? Would there be any change in meaning?

Yes, it means "more than". Other examples:
- 两千多人 (over/more than 2,000 individuals)
- 三百多只 (over/more than 300)

Does not really sound right with 五百萬多.

For example, is it the number of points that I received on an examination? Or, is it the number of D-Marks that I have in my pocket? If I say that I have 100 million is it not the same? Would you be satisfied to think that I have 100 units of one million? In the example I have provided 萬 is of this latter type of unit -- not the former. Are you suggesting that the two are treated in Chinese in the same way? |
