English term

sharps closet

English Art/Literary Medical (general)
A patient is admitted to a mental clinic. The nurse explains:

After the inspection, we take all the things we set aside and we put them into a bin marked with your very name on it, the bin then goes into the sharps closet.

What is the sharps closet - simply a closet where sharp things are kept?

yes

That is what my acupunturist has on the cabinet with the needles in it.

agree Dr Sue Levy (X) : in the psychiatric context, it's where any items that might be used to do harm to oneself or others are kept under lock and key. They are the patient's personal belongings so they are not discarded - it's not the rubbish bin!

agree Richard Benham : Yes, and with Sue. In general medical usage, "sharps" are things like used syringes and scalpesls, but that is clearly not appropriate here.

the cupboard where bio-hazard materials are kept.

The Sharps containers ('bin' in this case perhaps) are used to store discarded materials, such as used needles, bandages, etc. It seems to me that in this hospital they have a separate Sharps container for each patient and these containers or bins are stored in the Sharps closet. These types of containers are used to keep discarded bio-hazard materials until the time that they can be disposed of properly.

I hope that this helps.

disagree Peter Enright : Here I think the context would imply the patient's items are to be kept out of harm's way iuntil the pt is discharged, rather than stored prior to imminent disposal.
