Grammatical Analysis
Sentence: 他對每一件事都很留意,所以他知道的事比別人多。
First Attempt: He pays careful attention to detail, and as a result knows more than others.
Question 1: May I translate 每一件事 as "detail". I have chosen this rendering we are not told what 事 is.
Question 2: I am uncomfortable with the second part of this sentence, as the subject (what is known by 他 -- namely, 他知道的事) and the basis for comparison 別人 are mismatched. Would you consider this sloppy grammar or typical Chinese?
Certainly without prior knowledge of what is probably meant, the grammar of this sentence offer no clue as to what is truly being compared.
As always, you are welcome to comment on other parts of the sentence.

For the first question, I think Ms li cullen's rendition is more accurate.
For the second question, 他對每一件事都很留意,所以他知道的事比別人多, yes, I think this sentense is sloppy grammatically. It should be: 他對每一件事都很留意,所以他知道的事比別人的多, or 他對每一件事都很留意,所以他知道的事比別人知道的多。But “他對每一件事都很留意,所以他知道的事比別人多” is also acceptable in China. It could not lead to misunderstanding in the Chinese

Acknowledgement: Although li cullen provided a good reply to Question 1, she did not reply to Question 2, thus I must award the points to Bill Lao, who provided an excellent response to Question 2 and good confirmation of li cullen's entry. I also thank Yang Min (Minoer) for her confirmation of li cullen's entry.
I have to post early today, as I will be gone all afternoon."
