A mon avis, "core" ne peut pas être traduit par élémentaire qui a une connotation de simplicité; un core device est plutôt un composant (plus "physico-technologique" qu'élément) de base dans le sens fondamental (base = fondement)
Comment: "This pretty much confirms what I thought but I cannot use the word "composante" as it appears later in the text. I have to use the terms "appareil" or "dispositif". Fondamental sounds a little excessive in this context so I think I'll use "de base. Many thanks anyway, Christian."
