The full sentence is 高度に情報化した現代社会において、マスメディアが適切な情報を広く提供することによって、自殺予防に大きな役割を果たすことが期待されている。
"...in today's highly informatized society..." is the best I've been able to come up with... Anyone have anything more elegant than this mess?

I did not notice this KudoZ question until I saw the posting on the Japanese forum.
I think for this particular sentence "today's (highly) information-oriented society" is a good solution.
I am not listing URLs, because you can find plenty by typing "information-oriented society" in Google. Many of them are Japanese websites, but there are others as well.
I would personally omit "highly" from the English, I don't think it is needed there.
The other answers offer some good suggestions, too, so there are plenty of choices.
Good that you asked, "informatized society" would not be a nice translation.

: I like the first one, if it fits within the sentence as a whole. If it's describing one particular country or society, you can just replace "age" w/society and drop "we live (in)."

The context is not necessary meant to IT. Read the Japanese more carefully. 情報化した現代社会 has much broader context than just that. Besides there is no need to discuss its "impact" here.

I think you can just say "today's information society." Probably what they are referring to is the transition from an industry-based society to an information or services based society. In my experience 化 doesn't always need to be translated in English.

What about simply "information age" which (I think) implies 高度, and means that access to information is widely available today's era.
This is how I would translate the entire sentence:
In today’s information age, mass media is expected to play a significant role in suicide prevention by making the right kind of information widely available.

One problem with the use of the formula "XXX-society" is that it is not clear whether society is the agent of action or the object/victim of that same action...
Policy documents would much prefer the convervation of such ambiguities (as this makes it hard to challenge the policy message since it's two-headed)... but "normal" plain old-fashioned of spread-out expressions would be more helpful to readers (as information is no longer scripted).
Since the source says of "マスメディアが適切な情報を広く提供することによって", I wonder whether it is necessary to stress the hi-tech aspect...
On the other hand, Susan-san does have her point -- in preserving something "unqiue" to the original Japanese interpretation of "情報化"...
"information age" certainly carry more technological connotations. My version is more interested in the rapid flow and mass distribution of information... (so, that's why you can cut out the word "technology")... perhaps I wasn't articulating that point clear enough.

thank you Maynard! I see that I broke another Kudoz rule. My point is that it's an illusion that the effects of mass media come solely from so-called advanced technologies... newpapers and TV, for example, are hardly anywhere near what we call hi-tech.
