Accordng to their job description one of their major responsabilities is to observe signals along the track,monitor gauges and operate controls

"Train Driver who operates trains to convey passengers or goods. They may perform the following tasks:

inspect trains, reporting major defects and carrying out necessary adjustments
keep to timetables, making sure that safety regulations are followed
observe and obey signals along the track, operate controls, monitor gauges and conform to prescribed vehicle speeds
stop at stations to pick up and set down passengers, luggage and freight
shunt rolling stock in marshalling yards and sidings along the line
operate points when shunting
refuel diesel trains, check oil, water and sand and top up as necessary."
