Again, I am approaching this one with a low confidence level ...
"Fernschreibmeister" appears to be a military rank corresponding to "Feldwebel" --> please see the two links below.
For the rank of Feldwebel he should have served at least 5-6 years - you didn't state the service time but it might give you an indication as to the accuracy of this answer. If he served only one or two years I am wrong, if he served 5 or more years I might be right ...
If I am right I feel it is not only important to convey the specialization (i.e. teletypist) but also the associated military rank.
