Spanish term

cabo segundo

Rodrigo, thanks for the explanation. Please take a look at the note that I have just added. Happy New Year!
Patricia Rosas Jan 4, 2006:
If that is the actual order, then I think you're safest using the Spanish title and in parentheses you could add that it is the lowest ranking officer in the corps.

deputy constable/sergeant

In England police hierarchy is undoubtedly different to that in Chile. The organisational chart below shows the chain of command of an English police force. Both sergeant and constable are used frequently in English(UK).

Hope this helps

Second Corporal

second sergeant

The Carabineros make a distinction when referring to an officer, but in US police departments, even though grades of sergeants exist, the title does not reflect it (the payroll office would list him as "Sergeant II" but he would be referred to as Sergeant Smith). I found a few instances (via Google) of "second sergeant" in military contexts (see below).

An option would be to retain the Spanish title, putting in parentheses "second sergeant."

patrol officer second class (third class)

Given Rodrigo's explanation, the position of "cabo segundo" appears to be the lowest rank within the force. Thus, depending on the police department, it could be any one of the following options (at least here in the US):

1) Patrol Officer
2) Patrol Officer Second Class
3) Patrol Officer Third Class
4) Probationary Patrol Officer

In the end, it depends on the police force.

Good luck, Rodrigo!
