Sempre quis saber como se diz DIA DE FINADOS(também conhecido como DIA DOS MORTOS) em inglês. Pensei que fosse Memorial Day, mas me disseram que não. Alguém poderia me ajudar?

Palma De Calles Nov 2, 2005:
Dia de Finados Amigos, gostaria de esclarecer que no Brasil comemora-se o DIA DE TODOS OS SANTOS em 1 de novembro e o DIA DE FINADOS em 2 de novembro.
Dear friends, this is just to let you know that on Nov 1st we celebrate DIA DE TODOS OS SANTOS and FINADOS is celebrated on Nov 2nd, therefore two different holidays. Thank you.
Muriel Vasconcellos Nov 2, 2005:
All Souls Day: 385,000 hits; All Saints Day: 1,120,000 hits; Day of the Dead: 3,110,000 hits -- most of the last, as far as I can tell, referring to the holiday. Right now I am looking at a beautiful coffee table book about the Mexican Days of the Dead.

agree María Leonor Acevedo-Miranda : One can see the religious culture of every one.. :)) The one you mention was yesterday, and the only one that is correct. Have a good Day.

Thanks, Maria Leonor!
neutral Muriel Vasconcellos : I stand corrected on All Saints Day. Those are religious holidays, but not secular holidays. For me, it's alien to think of a religious holiday (other than Christmas) being a national holiday.

Muriel, All Saints Day is on November 1st and All Souls Day is on November 2nd - 2 separate and different church holidays! Day of the Dead is not the correct name designated by the church no matter how many hits

agree angloluso : without any shadow of a doubt. People that use google constantly to confirm the validity of translations need their heads testing - especially when using English.

I agree that we put too much faith in Googling terms, although it does come in handy! What should be noted is that in this case, it's a national "religious" holiday, hence All Souls Day.
agree Michael Green : All Souls' Day

Tomorrow is a national holiday: The Day of the Dead

This would be it.
Peer comment(s):

neutral Enza Longo : I really don't think so, Robert! The Day of the Dead sounds like the title of a horror film! I confess I've referred to it this way myself :-), but it's not the official name designated by the Catholic Church

Well, there are numerous references for "Day of the Dead" in the context of 1 November on Yahoo! and I've also heard it many times in English.... ;-)
disagree María Leonor Acevedo-Miranda : All Souls Day is the correct and only answer. One can not just "fabricate"

agree Muriel Vasconcellos : "All Souls Day" is the religious name. "The Day of the Dead" is WIDELY used in English (over 3 million references!).
2 hrs
neutral rhandler : There's something mixed up in Muriel's comment: All Saints Day is November 1st. All Souls Day is November 2nd. They are not the same holiday.

agree Fiona Stephenson : Day of the Dead would not be wrong in a certain context, especially if talking about the Mexican Celebration. (The poster does not mention Brazil!)
