Thank you all for your excellent suggestions, all dully noted.
Bett (asker) Oct 21, 2005:
thank you Thank you both for the invaluable feedback! I have chosen rogatory letter because this is going to North America, but have already registered the other suggestions. Thank you! Have a nice weekend.
Wm Steinmetz (X) Oct 21, 2005:
The form "rogatory letter" is perfectly legitimate, used by many native speakers working in the field (especially in Britain and Canada), referenced in many legal dictionaries, and even preferred by campaigners of Plain English.

Deborah do Carmo Oct 21, 2005:
A Letter Rogatory or Letter of Request is a formal request from a court to a foreign court for some type of judicial assistance. The most common remedies sought by Letters Rogatory are service of process and taking of evidence.

Deborah do Carmo Oct 21, 2005:
Hi Bett, just a word of advice it letter(s) rogatory (not vice-versa) - if you are translating for a foreign authority in the EU, you can also use "letter of request" - on this side of the Atlantic both letter rogatory and letter of request are used.

neutral Jorge Rodrigues : Não entendi. Preposto, pelo menos no Brasil, é um representante legal. Preposto pode ser traduzido como "preferred"?

Or: to appoint a legal representative.
Peer comment(s):

agree Deborah do Carmo : I'd opt for legal representative Jorge, proxy is limited in some jurisdictions to a representative appointed to vote at company AGMs, so your second suggestion is more neutral and safer to use, since this is a letter rogatory + for a foreign authority
