I have been unable to find a suitable translation for this anywhere - I'm dubious about translating it literally. Any ideas? Here's the full sentence:
Pendant le service militaire ou paramilitaire (service civique de la jeunesse) du salarié et pendant les périodes obligatoires d’instruction militaire auxquelles il est astreint, le contrat de travail est suspendu.

There's no good way to translate the part in parentheses it seems to me. I'd be inclined to restructure the entire sentence. Since we don't know the country or other context, it's hard to know whether the young people are men only or men and women and whether the "civic service" is military only or includes other types of public service. (I'm surprised that the term is "civic service" and not "military service". Nevertheless, from the text you've provided, I'd be inclined to rewrite the text along the following lines:
"During a the periods when a young employee is fulfilling his [or her] mandatory military or paramilitary service or is called to obligatory military training ...."
My translation may not be the best, but my point is that I don't think there's a graceful way to say the bit in parentheses. I do like ParisMinx's proposed answer IF the context is African, since many countries there have a program that is called the National Youth Service (with capital letters).
