We went out not looking for each other, but knowing that we were out to find each other.

We went out not looking for each other, but knowing that we were out to find each other.

All the answers so far translate the meaning reasonably well. Now you must choose the one answer that does both that and retain the quasi poetic/literary flavor of the original.

Comment: "I found this to be the closest to the kind of answer I needed; however, since Cortazar's writings are mostly poetic prose, it is rather difficult to come up with the "right" words to translate him. But, hey! translating poetry is certainly a challenge! Thank-you very much."

We weren't exactly looking for each other but we knew that we were looking to find each other.

"Each of us would go out, not specifically looking for the other,....

...but knowing that we were hoping to run into each other." (In English, "run into" conveys the ostensible casualness of the encounter, in a way that "see" or "meet" would not...)

We would go out walking, not seeking each other, but knowing we were out walking

---to find each other.

I've tried to keep the flavor of the literary language of the original in my translation: Cortazar uses fairly "high," literary language.
