Dutch term

gemoduleered katoen

Dutch to English Tech/Engineering Other dust masks
General context: safety manual of a Belgian branch of an international petrochemical company.

Very few google hits for the two terms in combination, of which one has 'genetisch gemoduleerede micro-organismen'. That may be a strong hint, but I'm wary of jumping to conclusions.

Specific context:

5.1.1.1. Stofmaskers

Discussion

Non-ProZ.com Jul 12, 2005:
Maybe the obvious translation is correct, but then why are there no google hits for "modulated cotton"? It seems a bit hard to believe that cotton that has been manipulated in its genetic properties or during its growth is used specifically for the masks (they are just 'normal' dust/gas masks). Also, I'm intrigued by the use of the word 'moduleren' in connection with making balloon figures (google 'ballon + moduleren'). Could 'gemoduleerd katoen' be something like 'corrugated cotton' or 'shaped cotton'? Perhaps the text should be interpreted as 'patroon met gemoduleerd katoenfiberweefsel vulling'. There's also a related term in the text: 'ringgemoduleerd katoen' in the context of the filtration element of an absorption-type filter.
Unfortunately, asking the client has proven to be useless in this case.

modulated cotton

This long window of opportunity during which fiber diameter and, thus, perimeter, can be modulated may provide a new avenue for changing fiber growth and development for the improvement in textile properties of cotton.
